Du Nord

Plant-based meals made from boreal ingredients, surplus vegetables from Canadian farms, and other natural ingredients.

Local product and flavor, with inspiration from elsewhere. What could be better for dinner!

The short, abundant season of the boreal zone led our ancestors to use dehydration to preserve their surpluses so they could continue to eat the fruits of their local lands year-round. Drawing on their example, they seek to reduce the contemporary problem of systemic food waste in Canada by not only reducing waste at the source by dehydrating surpluses, but by popularizing the use of dehydrated local produce through complete, easy-to-cook meals.

Their Story

After 5 years working on the development of Lufa Farms, Jonathan Dumas founded Dunord to fill an important need in his life: a quick and affordable meal solution that doesn’t compromise his environmental values and nutritional needs. In addition, his passion for local food has pushed him to include at least one wild ingredient from Quebec in each recipe. Motivated by the need for concrete solutions to waste and by the food needs of his community, he guides Dunord vers l’objectif de réduire le gaspillage alimentaire au Québec en deux étapes concrètes:

1) Popularize the consumption of dehydrated meals in order to reduce the 17% of waste present in Quebec homes.

2) Save the 5% of Quebec vegetables that are left in the fields in order to dehydrate them and integrate them into their recipes.

“I was working in the food industry and I saw a need for easy-to-eat meals that didn’t take a lot of time to cook, because we’re all busy […] I wanted them to be inexpensive and have a minimal environmental impact. Dehydration was the obvious choice. It allows me to take surplus produce from Quebec farms and dehydrate it.”
