Stirjoy

Plant-based ready-to-cook meals, made from surplus produce from local farms and the abundance of the boreal ecosystem.

A local product with inspiration from around the world. What could be better for dinner?

The short abundant season of the boreal zone pushed our ancestors to use dehydration to preserve their harvest surplus in order to continue eating the fruit of the land all year round. Drawing on their example, Stirjoy seeks to reduce the contemporary problem of systemic food waste in Canada by reducing it at the source through the dehydration of harvest surplus, as well as by popularizing the use of dehydrated local produce through complete, easy-to-cook meal kits.

Their Story

After 5 years working on the development of Lufa Farms, Jonathan Dumas founded Dunord to address a key need in his life: quick and affordable meal solutions that don't compromise on his environmental values or nutritional needs. He was disappointed to find that most options on the market were compromises on his needs: the healthy and convenient meal options were too expensive, and the affordable meals offered poor nutrition and no regard for sustainability. Driven by the need for concrete solutions to food waste and the nutritional needs of his community, he is now guiding Stirjoy toward the goal of reducing food waste in Quebec through two concrete actions:

1) Popularize the consumption of dehydrated meals in order to reduce the 17% of waste present in Quebec homes.

2) Save the 5% of Quebec vegetables that are left in the fields in order to dehydrate them and integrate them into their recipes.

“I was working in the food industry and I saw a need for easy-to-eat meals that didn’t take a lot of time to cook, because we’re all busy […] I wanted them to be inexpensive and have a minimal environmental impact. Dehydration was the obvious choice. It allows me to take surplus produce from Quebec farms and dehydrate it.”
