The oldest female Benedictine monastery in Quebec opens its doors to a documentary filmmaker for the first time. Observed closely, life behind its gates is more lively than one would have imagined. Around twenty cloistered nuns share their daily lives with diligence and humor. A contemplative portrait of a fraternal and supportive community emerges, punctuated by prayer, work and game evenings.
Ciné-Quartier presents On the Other Side by Lessandro Sócrates Sunday, August 18 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, August 21 at 9 p.m.
“On a visual level, the director skillfully plays with point of view, subtly highlighted in certain scenes, whether the camera is on one side or the other of the wall. But the more the film progresses, the closer the camera gets to the nuns and their daily life, punctuated by the activities that occupy them between each of the seven services they celebrate each day.
